Another opportunity to serve from the Oregon Health Authority:

Governor Kitzhaber is seeking nominations and suggestions for members to the Health Evidence Review Commission, people who are committed to creating a high-value health care delivery system in Oregon. Nominations are due Sept. 30, 2011.

Created during the 2011 legislative session, the Health Evidence Review Commission (HERC) will replace the Health Services Commission and the Health Resources Commission effective Jan. 1, 2012.

As a state, we have a moral imperative to be effective stewards of the taxpayers’ dollars by focusing our limited resources where they will do the greatest good for the populations we serve.

This means that we must not spend these limited resources on unproven interventions nor on expensive interventions when less costly but equally effective treatments are available. By doing so, we will begin to reduce the cost of health care and increase our ability to provide and maintain access to quality health care not only for our Medicaid patients, but for all of us.

The newly created Health Evidence Review Commission (HERC) will continue to uphold our proud tradition of transparently using the best available evidence for the critically important health policy decisions that lie ahead. Created by legislation during the 2011 session, HERC will continue the almost two decades of evidence-based work of the commissions it is replacing, the Health Services Commission and the Health Resources Commission.

The commission will be made up of 13 individuals including physicians, a dentist, a public health representative, and a behavioral health provider such as a social worker, alcohol and drug treatment provider or psychologist or psychiatrist, as well as participants representing consumers, pharmacy and complementary and alternative medicine providers and the insurance industry. The providers must be licensed to practice in Oregon.
