In The Oregonian, Joe Rojas-Burke reports:

A 25-bed hospital in Astoria is the only one in Oregon to gain national recognition for adopting computer information technology to improve patient care.

The annual survey by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine listed Columbia Memorial Hospital as one of the nation’s “most wired” small and rural hospitals. The voluntary survey asked hospitals across the nation to report progress using computer information technology to prevent drug errors, organize patient care, safeguard private patient information, and other applications.

Among those designated “most wired,” 67 percent have established electronic prescription ordering, compared with 46 percent among all hospitals that responded to the survey. And 100 percent of the “most wired” hospitals said they encrypt patient data on company laptops, compared with 85 percent of all hospitals in the survey.

17 hospitals in the state of Washington were recognized in the categories of “most wired,” “most wired small and rural” or “most improved.”
