Town Hall Update

Wow, the town halls are hot in the news - but not because the media is talking about what we need in terms of health reform, or how the health crisis is hurting Americans and American businesses, but because of the sound of people trying to disrupt the town hall process by yelling and screaming.

Sing Out! for Single-Payer Health Care Road Show

From the Corvallis Gazette Times:

Rabble-rousing labor singer Anne Feeney will bring her "Sing Out! for Single-Payer Health Care Road Show" to Central Park at 7 p.m. Monday to shore up support for a national health plan, as opposed to the "public plan option" being touted by President Obama as part of the reform package being hashed out in Congress.

Also on the bill are Raina Rose, Chris Chandler, Paul Benoit, Jason Luckett, David Rovics, Green Mountain Grass, Patrick Dodd and Citizens´ Band.

Feeney and a rotating cast of fellow performers have been working their way up the West Coast this summer to stump for a single-payer health system, which has broad support among reform groups but faces stiff resistance from insurance companies and other factions of the U.S. health care industry.

"When I learned about this I stepped up to the plate and said, `I can organize this in Benton County,´ " said Paul Hochfeld, a Corvallis emergency room physician and member of Physicians for a National Health Program.

"It´s about having fun, but it´s also about advocating for single-payer health care."

Hochfeld called the road show a "Chautauqua-style" event with a strong educational component. Many of the musicians will perform songs relating to health care, and after the opening set, Hochfeld and others will address the crowd about the issue.

"It´ll be a real festive kind of thing," said local health reform advocate Betty Johnson.

The show will take place at the Central Park Gazebo, near the intersection of Southwest Eighth Street and Madison Avenue. Spectators can bring lawn chairs and blankets or sit on the grass.

Donations will be accepted to defray expenses for the performers and organizers.

The event is sponsored by the Oregon chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program, Mid-Valley Health Care Advocates and the Corvallis chapter of the Archimedes Movement.

Archimedes Movement Members on KBOO Radio

This coming Monday the 23rd at 11 AM, KBOO will air on its HealthWatch program: "4 Advocates Talk about Health Care Reform." The four are Betty Johnson, Mike Huntington, Joe Zaerr and Roberta Hall.

KBOO is at 100.7 FM in Corvallis, 90.7 in Portland, see the KBOO website for other availabilities, including listening live on the Web.

In this half hour session they'll talk about why House Bill 2009 needs to include a public plan offering health care, and a Health Authority, and why innovations at the state level are important.

If you have ever had any problems getting KBOO, be sure your radio has an aerial -- or just attach a wire to the aerial and raise it toward the ceiling (at my house we use a twistie to attach a wire to a plant hook on the ceiling--works great). If you're in the Portland to Salem area, KBOO is at 90.7--it's 100.7 in Albany and Corvallis.
